The domestic season in India witnessed a historic incidence today as two of the all-time greats of modern cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, made a comeback in the Vijay Hazare trophy. The fact that these two stalwarts of modern cricket are a part of the 2025 season of the trophy has not only lifted the prestige of this inter-state trophy but has also been a learning experience in itself in terms of one day batting. Playing for their domestic sides of Mumbai and Delhi, these two giants of one-day cricket have shown reasons why they are considered the best in 50 overs.
Rohit Sharma’s Explosive Century for Mumbai
Starting fresh from the Vijay Hazare Trophy after an interval of seven long years, Rohit Sharma was back in his elements. While playing Sikkim at Jaipur, Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai captain, defied all odds and showed his classy and intimidating abilities to the fullest. Rohit Sharma reached his first hundred in just 62 balls, thereby recording the fastest List A hundred of his incredible career. Rohit Sharma broke his own record of an 63-ball hundred that was made against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup.
The Hitman did not restrict himself within triple figures. He carried forward smashing a massive 155 runs off just 94 deliveries, in which he displayed 18 boundaries along with 9 sixer hits. The aggression right from the first over made sure that Mumbai overruns the total of 237 with more than 19 overs at their disposal. This display makes it evident that he is in rhythm and ready when it comes to fitness, as he is concentrating on the 50-over game for India.
Virat Kohli Achieves 16000 Run Milestone
While Rohit was setting records in Jaipur, Virat Kohli was making history in Bengaluru. Making a comeback in the Vijay Hazare trophy after 15 long years, Kohli appeared for Delhi in the match against Andhra Pradesh. With just a single required to reach 16,000 in List A matches, he reached the milestone in his first scoring shot.
With this achievement, Kohli joined only Sachin Tendulkar of India and the ninth person in the history of cricket to reach 16,000 runs in the one day format of the game. Kohli’s innings was a perfect combination of aggression and strategies. While chasing a tough target of 299 runs, Kohli showed the way with his amazing knock of 131 runs off just 101 balls that helped India reach the final easily with a four-wicket win.
A Master Class in Chasing and Consistency
Both veterans showcased the strengths that make them special. Rohit Sharma started the innings aggressively, as has become the norm with him over the past few seasons. This put the visiting bowlers under the necessarily-immediate spotlight. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli showcased the qualities that make him the best chase-master as he conquered the middle stage with perfection.
But coming back to domestic cricket is a big thing for the BCCI and how they are promoting senior players to play in domestic tournaments. From a fans’ point of view, coming back to Indian cricket reminds them of their first stint in either Delhi or Mumbai colors. Other than that, seeing them play has been an inspiration to youngsters in the dressing room.
