Govardhan Asrani, veteran Bollywood actor popularly known as Asrani, left the world at the age of 84 on October 20, 2025. His untimely demise occurred just hours after he posted Diwali greetings on social media, making the news even more painful for fans who had spent their early years growing up watching his legendary roles. Asrani was said to have been fighting age-related sickness and was admitted to a Mumbai hospital after suffering breathing issues. His manager assured that water had filled his lungs, resulting in his death.

Govardhan Asrani spent more than five decades of his career acting in more than 350 Hindi and Gujarati movies. He is best recalled for his memorable role as the eccentric jailer in the cult classic Sholay, a role which is still fresh in Indian audiences’ minds. His perfect comic timing and narration skills made him a fixture in movies such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhamaal, Welcome, and Bunty Aur Babli 2.

According to his manager, it was Asrani’s wish to keep the proceedings discreet and away from public attention. In spite of the silent exit, his presence in Indian cinema is loud and long-lasting.
