The second Test between India and West Indies began on October 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. After winning the toss, India opted to bat first on a pitch that looked ideal for run scoring. The decision paid off handsomely as the hosts ended Day 1 in a commanding position.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Scores Unbeaten 173 in a Masterclass Innings
Yashasvi Jaiswal was the day’s top performer, scoring a marvelous unbeaten 173 off 253 balls. His innings was a combination of aggression and patience, with 16 boundaries and no sixes. Jaiswal’s skill to rotate strike and punish loose balls kept the scoreboard ticking all through the day.
This century was his seventh in Tests and arrived at the right juncture when India required a firm base. Jaiswal’s eagerness to score runs was evident as he stood firm from the beginning till the end.
Sai Sudharsan and KL Rahul Steer Strong Support
Jaiswal formed two crucial associations on the day. First, he scored 58 runs with KL Rahul, who scored at a rapid pace of 38 off 54 balls. Then he formed a huge 193-run partnership with debutant B Sai Sudharsan, who played impressively with a mature 87 off 165 balls.
Sudharsan’s temperament and technique were much appreciated as he played second fiddle to Jaiswal and soaked pressure from West Indies bowlers.
Shubman Gill Unbeaten as India Finish Day 1 on 318 for 2
Captain Shubman Gill came in at the end of the last session to join Jaiswal and was unbeaten on 20. He provided stability and ensured that India did not lose pace even as the track started to slow down.
India finished the day at 318 for 2 off 90 overs at a comfortable run rate of 3.53. The side now seems well set to create a humongous first innings score on Day 2.
West Indies Bowlers Fail to Impose Themselves
West Indies bowlers received no help from the ground and could not keep the Indian batsmen in check. Jomel Warrican was the lone effective bowler, taking 2 wickets for 60 runs from 20 overs. The rest of the bowling attack could not get past India’s top order.
Early wickets for the visitors on Day 2 will be required to bring the match back on track.
Series Context and What Lies Ahead
India takes the two-match Test series 1-0 and appears poised to wrap up the series with another string of dominant play. With Jaiswal in dream form and the middle order still untested, India has a golden chance to register a massive total.
West Indies will require a disciplined bowling display as well as excellent fielding if they are to try and get back into the game.
